RETScren PLUS Case Study #2: Normalizing Gas Consumption for Weather with RETScreen Plus

Case Study #2 Normalizing Gas Consumption for Weather with RETScreen Plus

Your client is applying to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for funding for connection of their building to a district heating system. As part of this application, they need to determine the annual gas consumption for the building under typical meteorological conditions. The building is located in Calgary at 51.04N, -114.06E.

The client provides you with monthly gas bills and you enter the gas consumption, in thousands of cubic feet, into a spreadsheet, data available for download here:  Calgary Gas Consumption (Excel Format)

Questions:

1)      Using the data in this spreadsheet, determine the relationship between daily gas consumption and heating degree days to 64.4°F. Then use this relationship with the average or typical number of heating degree days to 64.4°F for the entire year to estimate the annual gas requirement for a typical year.

2)      How does this gas requirement compare with the annual gas requirement in the years for which you have monitored data?

Additional Question:

3)      The FCM application is returned to you with a big, red “REJECTED” stamp on it. The FCM says that you have used your data sets incorrectly. What might they have been getting at, and what could you do to rectify the situation?
